Your Choice of Binding & Tab Options
Binding and tabs can make a big difference in the functionality of your training materials. Samco offers a full selection of binding and tabbing options:
Visual Appearance: Perfect binding is the method of binding used for softcover books the world over. Whether it is a novel or college textbook they both use this form of binding. This binding option allows for printed text along the book spine which makes it perfect for important conference manuals or guides.
Why use it: This solution provides a professional aesthetic look at very affordable price points. Perfect binding also allows for the inclusion of page dividers and tabs. The option of printing text on the book’s spine makes it far easier to find the publication on a bookshelf, which encourages attendees to keep the publication when they return home.
When to use it: This type of binding is best suited to conference reference manuals, event proceedings, educational publications and textbooks. Perfect binding is a good option for books with many pages.
Common Perfect bound finished sizes:
Plastic Coil (Spiral)
Visual Appearance: Plasticoil binding is reminiscent of the metal notebook spiral binding used fifty years ago but the coil is plastic instead metal. Almost everyone has encountered and likely owns a number of plasticoil notebooks, making them a seamless addition to your printed conference material portfolio.
Why use it: This method is ideal for most conference or convention usage. It allows attendees to open the document to lie flat or fold it in half quickly for on-the-fly note taking. Plastic coils are available in a range of colours that will complement the visual branding of your material. Plasticoil binding is useful for publications which require page tabs and dividers.
When to use it: There are a variety of uses which are a perfect fit, such as note taking during presentations or seminars, or if the publication will be required to lie flat. Additionally attendees will appreciate being provided with this type of binding if the venue has a theatre style seating configuration or pull-up half desks which most can remember from their college years. Over the last several years we’ve also printed numerous conference learning journals using plasticoil binding. This hybrid type of publication offers the best of both worlds; combining the conference program and lined pages intended for note-taking in one easy-to-use journal.
Visual Appearance: Wire-o binding is the familiar binding seen on many daytimers and journals. Similar to plasticoil binding, wire-o binding is sometimes seen as more elegant method. It is slightly more expensive, but adds visual appeal.
Why use it: This method is ideal for most conference or convention usage. It allows attendees to open the document to lie flat or fold it in half quickly for on-the-fly note taking. Wire-o coils are available in a range of colours that will complement the visual branding of your material. Wire-o binding is also useful for publications which require page tabs and dividers.
When to use it: Wherever it is necessary for the publication to open and lie flat. Perfect for conference learning journals which combine the conference program with pages designed for note taking.
Visual Appearance: Saddle stitch is the binding method used on most magazines. It is the familiar method where the document is fastened together with two staples in the spine and folded in half.
Why use it: This is a very cost-effective method of binding documents with a page count of less than ninety pages (depending on the thickness of the paper used). The appearance is very professional and the binding unobtrusive.
When to use it: This is a good option for programs, schedules, catalogues, product brochures and more. This method is not suitable for tabs or dividers, but reversed out tab blocks that bleed off the fore-edge of the document can provide a visual separation of sections and function in a manner similar to standard tabs, particularly if the blocks are printed in different colours for different sections. (see the section below on bleed tabs). Because of the narrow spine and position of the staples, there cannot be any writing on the spine of saddle stitched books.
Visual Appearance: Everyone is familiar with the ubiquitous 3-ring binder. Usually designed with clear sleeves on the front cover and spine, these binders can be highly attractive when used with well-designed inserts that slip into these sleeves.
Why use it: The use of printed inserts to customize the look of the binders is very cost-effective and is a perfect means to reflect your branding through the use of your logo, corporate colours and product images. This is an ideal binding method when your document requires dividers and tabs.
When to use it: 3-ring binders are perfect for documents with a very large number of pages. They are also invaluable for collecting data by having pages to be written on, removed and returned. If you have a large inventory of already printed materials that you would like to combine with event-specific documentation, this can easily be done by drilling holes in the existing materials. 3-ring binders also allow the insertion of last minute or unanticipated supplemental materials.
Clear, mylar-reinforced tab extension looks crisp and professional. The body of the sheet is printed in black only, on one or two sides. Tab printing is available in black on one or two sides. Custom Tab Colours are also available.
